ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS -- Sears roofing advertises roofing estimates at a savings of 500 dollars. They run their commercial 100s of times a day. In reality I had some people come over and look at my roof. They were higher by 1200 dollars than the previous contractors I had met. The commercial is a scam.

They are trying to get the old school folks to commit to their high price. Sears was a trusted company back in the 70s, people liked them. They now have become greedy and pray on the elderly. They had told my neighbor about 1/2 mile down from me that it would cost 6200 dollars for a new roof. When I had gone over to see the roof we found it had been done 3 years earlier and didn't even have to be done. I can't believe Sears has stooped down this low.

Runaround About New Roof
By -

MONROEVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA -- On Sept. 21, 2011 I met with a Sears representative about replacing the roof on my house. I felt I was getting a good deal with reputable people. I was told I would be contacted within 2 weeks as to when the job would be started. I made a down payment on a Sears card. After no contact in a month, I called the sales representative. He told me someone would contact me that day.

I called again after no contact in 2 days. I talked to his supervisor, no return call as promised. I talked to another supervisor, was told the foreman would call me by the end of the week, no call. In the meantime I get my credit card statement with the payment due. After six weeks I'm no closer to getting a new roof and I'm expected to pay for something I don't have.

Sears Roofing

CONCORD, CALIFORNIA -- Just wanted to let people know to be very careful when doing business with Sears Department Store if you decide to purchase a major item and receive a warranty. Don't let what is happening to me happen to you. I purchased a 12,000 dollar roof from Sears and received a 30 year warranty form them. Twelve years later parts of the roofing material are splitting. Spoke with Sears and they informed me we get a lot of rain, wind and movement of earth out here which affect the roof!!! If that isn't enough, they told me I needed to go up on the roof the first year to see how it was fairing!?

Sears on warranties for workmanship is 1 year, not 30. If you have problems then the customer must deal with the product line, not Sears. Of course the only reason I paid a higher price to have the roof installed by Sears was because I assumed the 30 year warranty meant that Sears would stand behind their product(s). Assuredly Sears would deal with the supplier of goods and take care of their warranty. Well, live and learn. Nope, basically you get a hang up call and the company line that there is nothing they can do for me.

I'm just advising everyone to be careful when doing business with Sears because they are not upfront with the customer and have false advertising techniques. Their warranty means absolutely nothing. Please send this notice to your friends so others won't be taken by misconceptions that we believe a warranty actually means something and a business stands behind the products they use.

Follow-up: I just had a roofer out to my house from Diamond Certified and was told the tiles are all defective... the whole roof!!!

Roof Shingles Installed by Sears
By -

25-year shingles installed 7 years ago by Sears Home Central In Ottawa ON are now cooked, curling, breaking and leaking. I get huge ice dams causing water to back up and drip inside. Cause: Sears' own representative informed me in July 09 that the ventilation they installed is done incorrectly, causing excessive heat buildup in attic, and it is their responsibility.

Since early July I have asked Sears to fix it. All I get is runaround, excuses, gobbledegook and outright lies from the local Sears installation manager. It is now late November and winter coming on. Of course, they can't do the necessary repairs while there is snow on the roof. Be warned. If you need any work done, find another contractor than Sears.

Leaking Roof
By -

ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA -- Since I paid twice what other estimates were to get a high quality roof with a 30 year warranty from Sears, it has leaked non-stop. I finally gave up last year after over 50 calls to their customer service dept, one FedEx letter to their president (got a return form letter). Sears maintains that they can't come and fix the roof until I prove interior damage. Then, after I show them interior damage, they say that my homeowners insurance must pay for it (pocket doors, ceiling crumbling, ruined wood beams and floors).

The company that installed the roof is no longer in business. The last time Sears sent a contractor out, this fellow blamed the leaks on the flashing, which Sears doesn't cover under their warranty, and quoted me $1200 to fix it. I hired an attorney but after $750 worth of research on class action suits against Sears for this same problem, I told him to quit... He said it would cost several thousand dollars to go after Sears. I haven't shopped at Sears since I got the defective roof and I hope you won't too.

Sears Home Services: Roofs

TAMPA, FLORIDA -- I chose Sears Home Services to re-shingle my roof, believing it would be a quality job based on of the Sears name... What a mistake that was. The first contractor Sears sent over arrived with lower grade material than I had purchased and improperly installed the shingles, resulting in THREE FAILED COUNTY INSPECTIONS.

After the third failed inspection Sears sent over a second contractor assuring me that they would "DO WHATEVER IT TAKES" to ensure the job was completed correctly. All shingles from the first installation were completely removed and the job was started from scratch. The second contractor also installed the shingles incorrectly.

Both contractors over penetrated the shingle with the nails, due to improperly adjusted pneumatic nailers, completely missed the trusses when re-nailing sheathing, improperly installed ridge vents, all corner drip edges were installed incorrectly. I was willing to pay extra for the Sears name and warranty. I'll never do that again. How does a $15,000.00 roof fail inspection three times? Think twice before you use Sears Home Services!

Overly Persistent Sears Salesman
By -

We will be installing a new roof on our home and are in the process of taking bids. The first company we called was Sears Home Services. Not only did the sales representative book a 7:30pm meeting because it "was all he had", he revealed later he had slept in till noon and was able to stay home until 6pm. After boring us for 2 hours with his presentation he finally got to the actual cost. When we explained to him that we wanted to seek other bids for work, he wanted to know why because Sears is the best, the other companies may be out of business in 30 years. It's good to have a sales pitch. However, when a potential customers tells you they are seeking other options let it be.

After interrupting our dinner and staying on for 3 hours on a Friday night, we had had enough and are seriously not considering Sears for the work at all.

Sears Home Services, Formerly Home Central Canada

OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- Sears Home Services, formerly Sears Home Central, botched roofing specialists, is their new name. The same crowd who botched up my roofing, with the same lousy attitude. Sears can change the name but until they improve their performance and make good on the mess they made at my home, I still see Sears as a bunch of crooks.

GEORGIA -- The rook around my chimney is leaking buckets of rain water. The roof was put on 2011. This is not the first complaint, we had leaks in the roof so bad had to fix the ceiling inside the first time. Now it is leaking bad around the chimney.
