I drop off my son's computer off at Staples at Almeda Genoa in Houston Texas. They charge me $75.76 for a computer diagnostic check and was told that the hard drive was bad. It was a recent computer, I took it to another computer repair store, and within minutes the computer was running. And was told nothing was wrong with the hard drive. The computer only needed to be restored. I was not charged for this service. My complaint is Staples has incompetent technicians. I wonder how many other people they scam. I will never recommend Staples to anyone for computer repair. RIPOFF!

Will Not Make Good on Their Protection Plan

LAKELAND, FLORIDA -- I bought a Toshiba laptop from Staples in June 2013. It has consistently given me problems. The main one is that it sporadically won't connect to our WiFi. We have an old computer that is falling apart that connects every time, so I know it's the "new" computer. We have the protection plan, which cost us $150.00. I understand now it costs half that.

We have taken it back to the techs numerous times, and they keep saying it's something different that is causing the problem. They refuse to honor our protection stating that they will give us a full refund if they can't fix it. They offered us $100.00 off on a new computer though! HA! I told them I wouldn't buy another computer from Staples! At this point, I wouldn't buy a piece of paper from them.

GREENVILLE, TEXAS -- My wife took our computer in for removal of a virus. She was told it would cost 70.00 for a diagnostic test. She told the associate that was fine if that price would fix it. The associate assured her that it would be fixed for that price. The next day she received a call stating the motherboard could be bad (145.00) or the fan could possibly be bad (69.00). She told the associate that was not what she was told and I picked the computer up the next day. I filed a complaint that day. 48 hours later, still no response.

Asst. Mgr. Mark ** Went Above and Beyond for Me!

CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE -- I ordered a Toshiba laptop (on sale beginning Sunday) early Sunday a.m. online and also reserved one at another Staples store to make sure I got one. Well, I went to the store to look at the laptop and they did, in fact, have one with my name on it. However, the tech guy told me that since I had also ordered one online I should take my name off the laptop in the store. Sadly, they did not have one on the floor for me to look at so I went home empty handed. Monday I got an email from Staples.com saying they were all out of that particular Toshiba laptop (still on sale for the week) and they could substitute another model with a slower processor for more money!

Needless to say, I was very frustrated. On Friday of the same week I passed another Staples on my way home from the other side of the state in Concord, NH. I was looking at different laptops when Mark **, asst. Mgr. asked if he could help me. I explained my whole Staples and Staples.com saga to him and he said he would call around to other stores to see if there were any left. I should add that Mark was the only manager in the store at the time and kept getting phone calls but still took the time to help me.

A few minutes later he came out with the exact Toshiba laptop I had ordered and reserved. I was so happy I almost cried. Mark ** is an exceptional employee and has restored my faith in Staples. I will only go to the Concord, NH store from now on.

Two Words: Rip Off

NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK -- First of all this is for NF, Canada... but whatever, same company. I really don't like Staples for the simple facts that they are:

  1. RIPPING YOU OFF.
  2. They are deceiving.

I find that many things at Staples especially repairs is like paying for an arm and a leg... and a heart and a kidney... it's ridiculous! First bad experience. That expensive warranty actually doesn't cover anything (and can you believe I thought it would cover something).

Second bad experience. Because I found out the warranty doesn't cover anything, I had to pay for the cracked screen. I can't remember the exact figure but to send it in and have it repaired cost over 200 bucks. At first I thought I was getting punked... but Ashton Kutcher never showed up. So, I went to a computer repair place in town and they charged 80 bucks... still too much. I went to an even smaller place, a guy that works out of his house and he did it for considerably cheaper.

Third bad experience: these people LOOOVVVEE charging installation fees. Essentially very simple installation procedures wind up costing you 30-60 bucks, or more... Don't do it! I never used their installation fees because frankly they're a joke. For instance, changing your RAM will cost you 30 bucks for them to do the difficult task that even a monkey could do. I did it in about 3 minutes after watching a Youtube tutorial. This company disturbs me.

Totally Great Sales Associate to Do Business With

READING, MASSACHUSETTS -- Yesterday I brought my laptop to Staples because it would not turn on. They examined it and told me that the battery was no longer any good. Since I had purchased an extended warranty, they said I was entitled to a one time replacement, and to call a number they gave me. I did this at home and was told I was not entitled to one. I then returned to the Staples store and had the most pleasant experience I've ever had bringing anything back.

The sales associate I dealt with was one of the most helpful I've ever encountered anywhere. His name was ** and he spoke to someone on the phone explaining, telling them (as I had told him) that since I had been told by the person who sold me the computer about one year ago that I was covered by the extended warranty "for everything", that I should be entitled to that coverage for the battery. He spent quite some time convincing the person on the telephone of this and was eventually successful.

This man not only has a great degree of technical expertise but also a natural knack for making one feel respected, well treated and comfortable during the experience. He took the time to explain things in detail in a way that a person with not too much computer savvy could understand, and he even remembered me from another time that I had been in! Totally respectful, this is the type of person that makes me glad I bought my computer from you guys rather than some wholesale outfit.

**, you are of high value to your company and your personality and perseverance have won them a customer for life. Thanks again. Rare person, extremely rare.

Thrown Out for Helping Elderly Woman

GILBERT, ARIZONA -- June 20, 2013 I stopped by the store to buy some packing tape before deployment. I heard the GM talking to an elderly customer about a random Trojan she had on her system. He wanted her to buy a brand new system and she said she had no money. When I said that I could quickly remove it from her system at absolutely no cost just as a community service, he ask me how I was going to remove it. And when I told him that I am not allowed to disclose that to him or my approve CYBER Toolkit he threw me and the customer out of the store stating that I was soliciting business.

I told him that I was not as we do 10 hours community service free a month and I could in clear conscience have her sell this elderly lady a new system in which I could fix in 5 minutes. Subsequently, I did. I am a Cyber Subject Matter Expert and fix no less than 3,000 servers and 15,000 laptops/desktops yearly for the government. You were not only rude to a service member but also tried to rip off and elderly woman. Shame on you!

1755 PEEBLES CREEK PKWY GOODYEAR, ARIZONA -- If ever a person, department, store deserved a 5+ Star Rating, Staples in Goodyear is it. Brandon in technical support not only helped me in getting an operating system reinstalled, he helped me get my software reinstated after my D drive was not found. He went on to make sure that it was working correctly for me. I know that I am a very difficult customer but Brandon and his team put my mind at ease and helped me to continue on with my work.

I realize this is a temporary fix because my computer and software are so outdated so I have chosen to take Brandon's advice and have purchased a computer that not only will work for me but fits my budget. It is people like Brandon that make people like me very happy that they took their computer to Staples for repair. I will always be a customer for whatever I need thanks to Brandon's help.

Staples Wiped Out All Data From My Computer.

PRESQUE ISLE, MAINE -- My husband's computer cord stopped charging his computer and it went dead. We took it to Staples and they said it needed a new motherboard that would cost $369.00. We asked if the data, including over 4,000 pictures would be lost. The technician told us "No," that it wouldn't affect the data content. We talked with him and told him we would go ahead and have the motherboard installed because we wanted to be able to get to the pictures and other data. We talked with him for over 30 minutes as we filled out the paperwork and he never said once we would lose our data. We paid our money in good faith.

When my husband picked up his computer all the data was wiped out. Even the programs that came with it, Microsoft and the Norton Security program we installed were gone. All he has is a solitaire game. I cannot tell you how upset we are. If we had known there was any chance this would happen we would never have had this done. We basically paid Staples $369.00 to wipe out everything on our computer. AND I have to purchase Windows and Norton again.

We are technologically savvy and we relied on the technician to guide us to the best option. We did not even receive a courtesy phone call to let us know our data would be lost. I have purchased three computers from Staples, plus hundreds of other products, but I will NEVER set foot in a Staples again. They do not care about you, only your money.
