Farm Insurance Hassle
By -

In December of 2009 I bought a farm and went directly to State Farm for insurance because I had used them before and had been very happy with them, though I never had to file a claim while insured at the previous farm. This time it has been one battle after another. They first said that we had too many horses, so we reduced the number to meet State Farm's requirements.

After meeting that requirement we mentioned we had a couple of old horses that would have to be put down when the weather breaks, so they made the assumption that I ran a horse rescue (not even close to the truth) and threatened to cancel my policy. After getting by that they said the roof was bad and again threatened to cancel my policy. I got, in writing, a statement that the roof did in fact need replaced sometime in the future, but it was good for at least one year.

After all of that I got one more, the latest, threat of a cancellation because I had not had home owners insurance for the past 5 years. I will say that I really like our agent, but the underwriters leave a lot to be desired (in my opinion). I can tell you that I am now actively looking for other insurance. I paid my farm insurance ahead for one year and am looking forward to demanding it be returned to me when I cancel with State Farm.

Better Know Your Stuff!

ILLINOIS -- I work with someone whose home was recently broken into. Many items were stolen, including her jewelry. She was told by her State Farm Agent that her jewelry would not be covered unless she had a rider. Knowing that if you want current fair market value for stolen jewelry you would have to have a rider, but ALSO knowing that the jewelry is covered without a rider, (though not for true value), I told her she should complain to her agent.

She did so and SURPRISE, SURPRISE, they are suddenly sending her a check for the stolen jewelry. State Farm will try and rip you off every chance they get. Oh, did I mention that the woman I work with is Spanish and is not really good at English. Pretty sad that State Farm would take advantage of her because of that fact. Buyer Beware!

Nothing But Great Response From Them

BOLINGBROOK, ILLINOIS -- After reading so many poor reviews on State Farm, I thought I'd show their good side. I guess it starts with finding a good agent, which I am lucky to have found. While rarely in an accident in the 37 years (I've been with them since I was 16) the past three years I had filed 2 car claims and 1 homeowners claim. In the case of the car, I was broadsided in my car. State Farm wanted to total the car. I LOVE my car and begged them to reconsider, explaining it was a limited edition, and after checking on the internet for 3 days and nights, I could not find another one for sale anywhere in the country.

To my surprise, State Farm reversed their decision and repaired my car. It took a month, but I am still driving my car! The second accident happened in a rental car while vacation. Not only did State Farm take care of it, they reduced my deductible from $500 to only $100 in this incident. How rare is that??!! The storm damage to my home tore up the roof, and rain damaged several ceilings in my home. State Farm paid for it all and then some, to ensure the job was done right.

I thought State Farm was expensive. I am now unemployed (like 5 million other Americans!!!) and was shopping for cheaper insurance. Hartford through AARP was about $700 less a year. But after reading reviews, I am not feeling comfortable with them. AllState was a joke at just over twice what I pay with State Farm. Again, I guess it all comes down to your agent. I am quite happy with mine.

State Farm Cancels Another Policy
By -

State Farm cancelled our policy today after many years with their company for a claim that was submitted. There was a very big snow storm that caused a tree limb to go through our roof. We thought that was the reason we paid insurance every month and even asked them if it would affect our policy and were told it would not. Then I get a call that they are dropping us because of it. They are unethical and do not care about their customers.

LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA -- We have been customers of State Farm since 1965 and have not had a homeowners insurance claim since 1990. They cancelled us after a dog bite claim for $6000. The sad part is that we have completely fenced the dog in a yard with locks on each gate, and no one even bothered to take a look. Shame on them!

I Think Its Illegal

I have had State Farm insurance for several years and had 1 claim at a rental property. They paid for a garage that was destroyed by wind. Of course I knew they would up the cost but not at the property where I live. I hope for their sake this is legal. I just found this out today and am going to check further tomorrow.

No Help

We sustained damage to our home from a tornado June 00, 2010. We choose to go with the company's premier service. Here it is Sept 8, 2010 and they haven't begun repairs. We have been with State Farm for over 25 years, and never had a claim. Looks like we'll be shopping for new homeowners insurance in the future.

Poor Service/Bad Accounting

I terminated my relationship with State Farm because of the decline in service. Management apologized but did nothing. State Farm also misapplied payments and then "shorted" my refund for the cancellation. Their "management" person apologized and said that she would straighten everything out. However, she has now disappeared and I am having to go to the Insurance Commission to get this matter resolved. If you're with State Farm for the service, that is a thing of the past.
