Whirlpool (And Others) Should Take Preventative Measures to Prevent Early Breakdowns

After 7 months, my washer stopped spinning and made a horrible grinding noise when it was washing (or wasn't washing.) The 'lid lock' light would flash and then go out, but the machine would still indicate it was washing. The repairman came out, tilted it back and discovered that the nut that holds the pulley on came off, the pulley dropped and the belt came off of the pulley wheel. He put it back together, put some Locktite on the nut and now it is running again.

Now, why can't all manufactures of heavy appliances do something like that so the machine doesn't breakdown within the 1st 7 months of use? The repairman said it was so they could save 1/2 cent per unit. I'm sure that was just an estimate for the sake of example, but because it is still under warranty, Whirlpool had to pay more than a 1/2 cent to get it repaired. Is this reasonable loss?

After 7 months....
By -

FLORIDA -- After 7 months of use of this brand new machine and it is already making me want to scream. It started making this grinding noise during the wash cycle of a small and very delicate load. Sounds like stripped gears, but after reading other reviews, it looks like it might be the bearings gone bad. Now it won't "drain and spin". I called the place where I bought it and they will send someone out on in the next few days to look at it. Depending on the outcome, I may just ask for my money back. I haven't talked to Whirlpool about this yet, but I just might. Standby... I will report back on what the repair man says.

Resolution Update 02/03/2012:

The repairman came out and fixed it. The nut that holds the pulley on fell off, he put Locktite on it, put it back together and it is working just fine now

Whrilpool Cabrio Noise

My washer was making a sound that sounded like marbles when it started to drain and during the spin cycle. I removed the discharge pump and found a penny inside that was making the noise. It makes me wonder how a penny got through those holes in the drum. To fix remove the back panel and tip your washer on its right side as you're looking at it. The lid will want pop up on its own, just let it. There are two pumps and I checked both of them but found the penny in the discharge pump that is on the back side bottom left.

1-year old Cabrio washing machine tying clothes into knots
By -

I purchased this washing machine at Lowes 13 months ago of course it's out of warranty so I'm pretty much stuck with a high dollar machine that has many problems and the Whirlpool corp customer service gives me the runaround long story short the cost to repair only to have this machine fail again is simply not worth it I'm stuck with a piece of high dollar junk. Trust me I will never buy another Whirlpool product again the washer in question is a Cabrio model WTW7340XWO.P. S. I also purchased the high dollar Cabrio dryer which is also starting to give me problems. Buyers Beware.

Whirlpool Cabrio WTW6600SW2 Washer

I have had my washing machine for four years (my prior Kenmore was 20 years old and still going strong, but I wanted a new matching set when I bought a new townhome). Sunday, I did two loads of clothes with no problem. I only wash once a week, my clothes, and my bedding. On Monday, I washed a new lightweight scarf by itself on Delicate. After about 12 minutes, I heard the beep and the control knob was flashing an F, followed by 50. I looked it up online and it said motor stalled and RPS board. I contacted Whirlpool who will do nothing about it.

I have read so many complaints online and the exorbitant cost (sometimes more than the machine cost - $948) to fix, and then have the F50 problem recur, that I am now trying to decide whether to put the money into the repairman's pocket or to buy a new machine - one that is, I hope, worth the money this time. I have sent a report to the FTC regarding this problem, and would urge anyone who has or has had the problem, whether it is F1, F50 or F51, to file a complaint so that Whirlpool will do the right thing and issue a recall.

Soiled and Soiled

2000 NORTH M63 BENTON HARBOR, MI 49022, MICHIGAN -- I purchased from Lowe's a Whirlpool Cabrio. Never had to use it much within the first 30 days since I was moving into my house. Shortly in about the next thirty days, it doesn't want to clean clothes and I have to hand spin the water out. This machine doesn't want to spin. I am so unhappy with this product, no one knows what to tell me to do about it. If I could sell it I would, really really would like to just get rid of this junk. It's only 3 months old. I can't imagine what it would do in about 1 year.

Hate It
By -

I hate this appliance. I spent a lot of money for this piece of junk. I have had nothing but problem. First the control panel went out, Whirlpool was kind enough to send a tech out after I called and complained, which would have cost me over $400 for the panel plus the service call...

Today I am washing and hear the signal beeping and go in to find the complete panel flashing at me and I am unable to power it off, so I have to unplug it and then it had the smell of rubber burning. I now have a tub full of water which cannot be emptied and I have to dip out what I can by hand with water still inside. I had to wring out my clothes because they were lying in a tub full of water which won't drain...

To fix this piece of crap would be too expensive since the first part was $400 plus the service fee. Can't imagine this would cost me... Forget it!!! I say purchase GE and you will be better off, no complaints with General Electric, but you can have this Whirlpool Cabrio set. Not worth the money it costs and I won't make the same mistake twice. Too bad this just cost me another $400 dollars today to purchase a brand new washer, when the Whirlpool is only 2-3 years old. Don't bother yourself making this purchase.

Bad Washing Machine and Service Agreement
By -

Purchased the Whirlpool Cabrio washer in 2008 and have had two major issues with the machine since that time. We also purchased the extended service agreement, and both times our wait time was over a week to have a repair person out. We purchased the machine at Lowe's and will not go back to them for this type of purchase again. We have also had enough Whirlpool to last a lifetime. With an active family, we cannot be without the use of our washing machine for over a week. If you are considering Whirlpool do so at your own risk.

Lousy washing machine
By -

I just received a notice about extending the warranty on the piece of crap called a Cabrio washing machine by Whirlpool. This is without a doubt the worst appliance I have ever bought. The only thing it is good for is painting a target on it and putting it in the yard for target practice. I am currently shopping around for a washing machine that will get my clothes clean and doesn't make them wrinkled. The pause button does not work so if it spins off balance or if I need to add a garment I have to unplug it. If you are in the market for a washing machine DO NOT
even consider this model. If anyone needs a target -- let me know. I'll gladly give it to you.

Whirlpool Cabrio Washer Is a Piece of Junk.
By -

We purchased this washing machine 3 years ago, but a little over a year after we purchased it stop working. Half way through a wash it stops working, returns a code LD and then starts beeping. We have to put it on drain/spin to have it drain the water and out and spin dry the clothes. I have to do this several times for one load! I had a service man take a look at it, and he pretty much said it would expensive to fix it and then charged 50 for nothing. Whirlpool offered me 15% back of the purchases of a new washer. Why would I buy their product ever again in my lifetime? Please read this and don't purchase their products for your own sake!
