Musty Smell on clothes after washed and dried.
By -

I've had my Whirlpool Duet Front Loading Washer/Steam Dryer for a little over a year, and almost from the first the clothes that come from dryer (not steam cycle) smell horribly musty - and almost with a too hot, or almost scorched scent, and I rarely use any cycle except the normal cycle on the dryer. There is a particularly unpleasant, almost dirty smell on clean towels and wash cloths immediately upon re-wetting for use. I always air dry my dirty towels if not washing immediately and never let them get soured before washing. I wash and dry 7 to 8 loads a week, rarely missing more than two days between doing laundry.

I clean my washer with Affresh regularly, and can detect no smell coming from either the washer or dryer when setting idle - only a hot (but not unpleasant) smell from the dryer immediately after use, and definitely from the clothes themselves after removal from the dryer. I've used Cheer HE, dryer sheets, Tide HE detergent and Snuggle Fabric Softener - all with the same results. I've tried using extra an rinse cycle just in case I'm using too much detergent. Our city water is clean and fresh and has no odor.

I wipe out the washer door seal frequently, and always leave the washer door open a couple of inches when it is setting idle. As I said, I cannot detect any odors in the washer, or the dryer. I am thoroughly disgusted with this problem and wonder if other consumers are also experiencing the same.

Washer and Dryer Eating my Clothes & they don't do ANYTHING!
By -

MICHIGAN -- OK, So we have 3 month old washer and dryers that we purchased, and about a month ago the washer "ate" my sons shirt. I never seemed to be able to call during the "correct hours" and I finally did so today as I was off work (we are on the West Coast). The washer ATE my husbands best work dress shirt and now 2 of my sons shirts...and I am furious! I called them at Whirlpool and they do NOTHING!

I think they should at least give replacement value to the items! All the woman did was kept repeating my name saying that they don't do anything about it... and if I read my warranty... blah, blah, blah... so we spent a fortune on these machines thinking we would have them for many years to come, and now they have cost us the insane price we paid, and 3 shirts... and now a day off work to meet them on Friday to see why this is happening in both the washer and dryer!

Oh, did I mention that she told me that she has had this complaint already with a few other customers... I NEVER saw this on line when we were researching these machines! I would NEVER buy Whirlpool again! I think they should do way more for you when you spend that kind of money on a washer and dryer! Or... if you spend anything on a new appliance! Just poor service! And, poooooooor attitude!

Whirlpool Duet Dryer Started My Clothes On Fire
By -

Today I had the shock of my life, my Whirlpool dryer (about one year old) set the load of clothes in it on fire. I couldn't believe it, the dryer was turned off and had been turned off for almost two hours when the fire broke out. The clothes were destroyed and the towel at the bottom of the load was totally ruined with burn marks... I am not talking about small burn marks, the towel was burned through and several items of clothing on top of it was burned as well.

My grandson has asthma and he was here and could not breath from the fumes and this thing was so hot it seared my throat and burned my eyes when I opened it. We had to take the clothes outside and hose them off to stop the fire as they were smoldering so badly. I have pictures of the clothing and someone will be out to look at the dryer tomorrow but I do not care, it is out of here. I will not put my family in danger with this fire hazard again, it is gone tomorrow..period. Please be aware this machine is a total fire hazard and I just am very thankful I was here when the fire started or I may not have a home tonight.

Fire Hazard
By -

I purchased a new WHIRLPOOL dryer less than a year ago, and have a lint trap on top which I clean as I put a new load of clothes in or if I need to put extra minutes if clothes aren't dry enough. Anyway, one morning I smelt burning, sorta like popcorn, {but worse} woke hubby. It was coming from dryer. After taking the back off the dryer there was at least I kid you not 10 inches of burnt lint all over bottom of dryer.

It really looked like at the time like insulation that's how thick the stuff was. There is NO way that amount of lint should have gotten all the way packed under the tumbler. It bypassed the hose. It's scary to think they have this fire hazard out there. We were lucky this time. We all check lint traps but who takes the backs off to look SCARY!!! PS- I have photos to prove it.

Duet Washer and Dryer Set
By -

OMAHA, NEVADA -- This duet Whirlpool set is a poor excuse for a washer and dryer. My clothes are not white anymore. They are all turning gray and they smell terrible. The dryer does not dry my towels and dishtowels after eighty minutes and this is a small load. I had 12 or more service men out to correct these problems and they don't know how to fix this problem on the washer and dryer. Where does a person go? Whirlpool puts out junk and should be ashamed of themselves I want my money back so I can go out and buy a top loader washer where my clothes will be white again.

Astoundingly Bad Quality
By -

We bought the top-of-the-line Whirlpool Duet washer and dryer three years ago for the front-load format, low-water usage, and expected longevity.

1) Dryer turns off before clothes were dry on automatic cycle. Warranty visit replaced parts. Marginal improvment.

2) Dryer turns off before clothes were dry. Warranty visit found no trouble. The problem continues to this day.

3) Dryer doesn't get hot. Authorized service visit replaced parts for $275.

4) Washer tub bangs sides on spin cycle and washer walks across the room regardless of load size. Authorized service visit proposed a $600 parts overhaul. I fixed it myself for $80 of parts. It was caused by poor engineering that omitted a lock washer and poor factory assembly leaving a nut loose.

5) Washer smells continuously. Whirlpool says to run a hot bleach cycle. It really requires a 6x/yr bleach scrubbing of the plastic collar folds in front of the drum to control some of the smell. Bacteria embeds in the plastic and the smell comes back quickly. Regardless, the first load of a day releases sewer gas into the room that is not improved by hot bleach loads.

6) Washer door handle plus dial knobs on both washer and dryer cracked off with gentle handling. The same poorly-designed replacement knob is $20 for $.02 worth of plastic.

Wife complains continuously. I'll never buy another Whirlpool anything.

New Whirlpool Dryer

For the record my family has been loyal Whirlpool consumers for ages. My mother always purchased Whirlpool appliances and my husband and I have done the same for the last 30 plus years. Our last washer and dryer set lasted for 14 years with minor repairs. It was with sadness that the washer died last summer (2006). At that time, we decided to purchase a whole new set. BIG mistake! Within two weeks I had someone out to do repairs. I was told that our venting system was too long (forget the fact that this dryer ducting system has worked great for years with no problem), but the heating element was replaced just in case.

Still, it would take two hours at the highest temperature to dry an average load of towels. I contacted Lowe's, where the set was purchased, and they were great. They replaced the dryer. This replacement has worked somewhat better than the first one until the last couple of months. I am back up to an hour and a half to two hours to dry an average load of laundry (not just towels).

Whirlpool has been absolutely awful when I have contacted them. Their customer service stinks and, apparently, they could really care less whether or not they lose customers, and this is one long term customers they have lost. NEVER again will I purchase any Whirlpool appliance, whether it is their name brand or store brand. My electric bill is soaring because it takes so long to dry a load. Next stop for me, a Better Business Bureau complaint!

Whirlpool Dryer Problems

We purchased a Whirlpool Dryer Model WED5500 in 2008. During the 2nd year, we started getting dark stain which looked like burn marks on our clothes, especially on shirt collars. We paid over $200 to have a Whirlpool registered technician repair the unit by replacing the gasket around the drum. This worked for a few months, then the problems started again. We've ruined countless articles of clothing, and Whirlpool will not rectify the problem. Rather they offer warranty programs that cost hundreds of dollars. I would highly recommend against purchasing an appliance by Whirlpool. This has been a horrible experience in customer service with shoddy product quality.

Whirlpool Charges Way Too Much for Repairs

I purchased a Whirlpool dryer 2 years ago. It had a one year warranty. OK understood, no problem. Called customer service to get an estimate on repairs. Got 2 offers. First offer was $95.00 for them to come check the issue plus the cost of parts and labor. Second offer was $269.00 which would cover everything and include another 1 year service warranty. That's awfully close to the original purchase price of the dryer! One can find the part in question on-line at a reasonable price. I called a local business and they came out, fixed it, told me how to fix it myself(if I should decide too) in the future and charged me 147.00 total.

They also told me that Whirlpool is aware of the problem with this particular dryer(which in my case was the timer). I want to know why they don't recall this product if they know about the problem? Consumers should not have to pay for repairs for a defective product Whirlpool is aware of! I do not recommend anyone purchasing this particular dryer from Whirlpool. I do recommend doing your research to find a better deal on service if you already own one of these dryers. I mean really, why pay almost as much for repairs as the purchase price of this dryer? Don't give Whirlpool more of your hard earned money.

Worst Appliance I have ever owned!
By -

I purchased a Whirlpool Duet Steam dryer from Sears... worse appliance I have ever owned and paid with warranty 1217.00!!! The door continually pops open. First time the repairman came out he said, Oh, that's normal, they all do that. It cannot be fixed, just a flaw in the product. Give it an extra hit on the top of the door and the side so it will stay shut. WHAT... are you believing that.

To make it worse, that extra hit does not make any darn difference. It pops open constantly... impossible to dry a med to large load as it will pop open every 2 minutes. And to think Sears knew this was a BAD product and did not stir me in the direction of a better choice. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE.
