Don't Buy a Whirlpool Duet Washer!
By -

In 2003, I bought a Whirlpool Duet Washer and Dryer Set for over $2000. Three years ago, I had to have the washer repaired for over $350. Then last year I had to have it repaired again for $375. Today, the repairman was back. He told me that the unit has to be replaced. He explained that while these washers are advertised as heavy duty, they really are not and only small loads should be washed.

I have small family: my wife, a seven year old daughter, two year old son (who wasn't even born most of the time we were using the washer) and me. This appliance received very normal use. So now I have buy a new washer, after having spent $350 three years ago, $375 last year, $145 today for the service call, plus the $1000 I spent to buy it. DON'T BUY A WHIRLPOOL.

DALLAS, TEXAS -- I bought the Whirlpool washer at Lowe's. After 14 months the unit isn't working. A sensor that allows water to enter the machine is shutting down so the water cannot enter the unit. The part is not being manufactured currently – Whirlpool has had multiple issues with many customers with this part. They are searching for a new manufacturer to build the sensor. Customer service rep by the name of Shannon is useless and doesn't care about the problem.

Even the Whirlpool technicians in the Dallas area are laughing at this situation. It's pathetic. A product becomes useless after just 14 months with no solution at hand. I will never buy another Whirlpool again. They are mass produced without the proper foresight into handling and manage problems down the road. This company is BAD!

Not Again

On 01/27/07, we purchased a new Duet Sport, matching, washer and dryer from Sears. We even bought the extended warranty. Well, we've been very unhappy since. We didn't know we had to use special, more costly, detergent and that we would have problems trying to keep the washer balanced. Nor did we realize the door would leak, sign of out-of-balance issue, the tub would not drain completely, causing mold, mildew, and odor problems. Thank god for the expensive cleaning agent made for this problem, and now that my warranties have expired, my washer doesn't work.

I'm pretty handy around the house but I have nowhere to start with this problem, I get no error codes. That might be because the touch pad controls are buckling and coming apart, don't know how long they will work; oh, no matter, the washer doesn't work anyway. And just a little side note, while searching the web for some help troubleshooting this problem, I find there is a class action lawsuit against Whirlpool for many of these very issues. I guess I ought to explain the "not again" statement: this is the second time I have purchased a "top of the line" appliance in recent years and got sewer quality; and no one seems to care.

Avoid Whirlpool Duet

Two weeks after purchase, the door gasket failed and water flooded my laundry room. After waiting a week for a repairman, he advised me that he would need to order the part. Another week passed and the repair service notified me that the part would not be available for another two weeks.

I contacted Whirlpool and they basically said "tough luck". No allowance for the expense/inconvenience of laundromat and completely unwilling to replace a unit they were unable to repair in a timely fashion. We tried to return the washer to the retailer and Whirlpool lied and told them we refused warranty service. I am extremely unhappy with both the product and Whirlpool warranty and customer support. Will never purchase another Whirlpool product again.

Run From the Whirlpool Duets

I am just getting started in this whole scam and I am already at my boiling point. When I purchased the Duet set in 2008 the salesman told me how great they were and how you could wash 14 pairs of jeans and a ton of towels and to load it full and it would save you a ton of water. Problem was he never offered an extended warranty, never even mentioned it. Now I am having the same problem with the bearings and the basket.

So I now have a two year old machine that cost me over $2400 with the bottom drawers. And the Whirlpool recommended repair guy comes out and listens to the washer run for 10 seconds, proceeds to charge me $129 for the trip and tells me I have to order two parts from Whirlpool for a total of over $900!

But here's the good news. They won't charge me anymore to install the parts and then I can purchase an extended warranty through the repair company at a much higher price than what I could have got through the dealer at the time of purchase had they offered it to me! I am considering legal action and will start with the place I purchased the set and then to Whirlpool. Has anybody had any success with dealing with Whirlpool on this matter? I know, stupid question but I am ready to explode!

Don't Buy Whirlpool

Here's my experience with WHIRLPOOL. I bought a brand new Whirlpool Duet Model # WFW9150WW00 Serial Number HL00656621. My Old GE washer died after 10 years ago. While in Lowe's I called a very good friend, he's a retired appliance repair technician. I asked him, “What's the best washer out there.” He stated "I love the Whirlpool Duet". I walked out of the store with it.

Here is where the fun begins. Over 3 WEEKS AGO my wife called me hysterical saying there was an explosion in my house. Being a police officer I rushed home to investigate. No explosion. I found my washer 6 feet from the wall (washer in 1st floor bathroom) tipped on its side leaking water everywhere, machine full of water. Cleaned the disaster area and put washer back. I called Whirlpool 1-800 number and 4 days later an appliance repair technician came to my home. I overheard him on his cellphone, I assume talking with the boss. The washer filled with water, overfilled, and went into spin mode. It became airborne!!!!!

The bricks that are bolted to the drum of the washer are broken, rubber front boot ripped to pieces, computer bad, controller bad. The technician assures me it can be fixed. Two weeks later I get the call my parts are in. Be home between 11 and 3 PM. Technician arrives at 3 PM. WRONG PARTS -- "Sorry sir -- I'll try to correct this problem." Another week goes by... I call repair technician today and I'm told "my parts are BACKORDERED". I'm a month without a washer. Guess what... if I bought a GE or Sears I'd be washing clothes in my house instead of the laundry mat.

Resolution Update 09/28/2010:

By Posting my frustration on this Web Site I was contacted by a Fantastic Lady from Whirlpool. Her name was Mandy and she had my parts Fed-Ex to me the next day. MANDY THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!!! Im out of the Laundry Mat !!!!

I purchased a Whirlpool Duet Washer and Dryer and paid almost $2000 for the set. The dryer has been fine, but the washer is poorly made. When it was less than 5 years old it required a new motor control unit, which cost over $400 for the part and service (F11 error code).

It also emits a horrible odor despite taking all the measures to minimize the smell such as tablets, hot water, detergents, bleach, etc.) I also wipe out off the rubber gasket and leave the door open although the smell has become unbearable if I leave the washer open. My clothes stink! The air around the washer stinks! I found out from the appliance store that this has been a major issue with Whirlpool and Whirlpool owned Maytag appliances. WHIRLPOOL WILL DO NOTHING about either the MCU failure or the odor.

The only recourse is to buy another brand or give Whirlpool another $1000 for their new and improved Duet model, that is supposed to have features that address the odor problem. I also found out that it is not just an issue with the rubber gasket. Even if you spend more money to replace it, you would still have smells coming from between the 2 drums, which you cannot get at. I am voting with my feet and voice against purchasing any products from Whirlpool until they compensate owners for this problem. DO NOT BUY from WHIRLPOOL. They will not stand behind their products. The quality they used to offer is no longer there.

Aesthetics not covered by extended warranty

While I love my washer, I was quite disappointed recently when I discovered this particular item was considered COSMETIC only. My "start" button has worn completely through to where I'm pushing into the machine itself. It is somewhat scary because one never knows when or if a wire will short while pushing the button. I called the number for the extended warranty and was told directly that it is cosmetic, not dangerous, UNLESS I get a shock or something.

While I understand this machine is a few years old, one would hope that Whirlpool would be interested enough to want this fixed. I no longer show the machine to friends who are looking for a GOOD washer and dryer because they would see the worn part on only the one button and then I would have to tell them that it appears Whirlpool and/or their warranty company have no interest in keeping the machine looking good along with working well. To correct this would certainly not cost the company much money and they would continue to have a happy customer. hmm, maybe I'll have to look into LG???

I own a Whirlpool duet washer/Dryer, bought in 2005 for 2,100 total. After 5 years, the dryer electronic board gone bad. Searched online and call the locals, all are charging about $180 for the board. I read online and many people are having the same problem within 1-3 years of use. I am lucky to have it working for almost 5 years. Whirlpool is doing a poor job testing their electronic designs. There are way too many infant mortalities. I will find a more reliable brand. I can get a cheap version of the dryers out there for $180.

This is the worst product I have ever purchased!! Bought it in December of 2007. Hooked it up when we closed on the house in March 08. Worked 4 months great. Then the boot ripped and was replaced. It was a different boot and we have had problems since. We have had at least a thousand dollars in clothing that comes out eaten. Often new things. It pulls everything it can into the gap in the liner and then overflows.

The appliance repair place has been out but of course it does not happen then so they can't do anything. The room they are in was newly built in 08 and I have had to replace molding and flooring because the overflow issues. If I wash more than a half a load it does not spin out - the clothes are soaking wet. Whirlpool said to have the extended repair place have a different repair company come out. We live in the country, the place that has been out is the only one in the area to come out here so here goes another battle. Don't waste your money - will cost you dearly with at least every 1 out of 3 loads.
