Shoddy Carpet & the Run Around
By -

HELENA, MONTANTA -- I purchased carpet and an upgraded pad through Home Depot and had it installed through Home Depot. It was installed the day before Thanksgiving 2005. I was getting the home ready to sell. After about four months we noticed pivot points outside the bathroom door and in front of a chair. Also we noticed some wear in other spots. I stopped into Home Depot and spoke with a sales manager who said he would come out and look at the carpet. I spoke with the manager of the carpet installer and she said it is just cheap nylon carpet. Funny I did not see the sign in the store that said €œcheap nylon carpet here.

The department manager and the manager from the installer came out. I was asked if I had cleaned the carpet, what type of carpet cleaner I used and did I use carpet cleaner on it. OH OH!!! Where was this going? Yes I cleaned it, home carpet cleaner and yes I did use carpet cleaner. Then I was told that I used too much detergent and that was making it kind of "mat up". I should now go over it with just hot water and I was informed that I never should have used detergent on it period.. So what do you think made the carpet wear poorly. Did I ruin it with detergent or was it the three large dogs?

I would have thought that someone in the carpet department would have said "don't use any detergent on your cheap nylon carpet" or you will void the warranty. Oh I guess it did not come with any warranty and if it has a warranty it can be voided if you use detergent, have pets or walk on it. Anyway the hot water bath didn't take care of the problem so Home Depot said they would would send out someone that was an independent contractor to give an objective opinion of the carpet. Weeks went by and finally he showed up and noted the pivot points and wear. I thought great he sees it too.

I heard nothing back on the carpet and after a couple of weeks called the local store and was told that nothing would be done as I had three large dogs. OH Really!!! Since Home Depot turned it into a dog thing, let's talk about the dogs. Yes I did have three dogs. A red setter, a blue healer/Springer spaniel and a Newfoundland puppy about 4 months old that we got in April (that would be four months after the carpet was down).

Had the "€œindependent contractor"€œ cared to note or ask me about the dogs I would have told him that if he looked in the backyard the whole yard and side of the home was set up as a kennel complete with straw, dog houses and feeding bowels. These dogs only slept in the home at night. They were put out first thing in the morning and weather permitting stayed out all day. Also the dogs were boarded in Montana City many times while we made trips to WA so they were out of the home for days & weeks at a time.

Gee if I had known that he was going to play the dog card, I would have put the dogs and everything associated with them in the detached garage/shop. What would he have done then? The carpet was not stained, shredded, torn or worn in a way consistent with animal wear. I don'€™t think the dogs made the pivot points outside the bathroom door or by the chair. The last two months that I owned the home, I had king sized sheets down on the floor to keep the carpet clean along with the rugs that were normally down.

Now let's talk about the real problem here and that is the shoddy carpet. I think it would have been a courtesy to give me a copy of the independent contractors report. After all if I was going to be screwed over that would be the equivalent of a kiss. I hardly think I would have spent the money on carpet with the intention of selling the home and then let the dogs trash it. I found a buyer for my home and told her upfront about the carpet wear and dealing with Home Depot. I told Home Depot that the issues needed to be resolved ASAP as the home was closing at the end of July.

I ended up discounting the home several thousand dollars so the new worn carpet would not become an issue during a home inspection. Now I have a bill to pay on the carpet of $2,000. I called the corporate office on 10/18/2006 and spoke with that person and got passed off to someone else who in turn passed me off to the credit billing department who then wanted to pass me off to someone else. I was told that I needed to put in writing my objection of the bill. After taking all my information - phone, billing address she put me on hold and then dropped the call.

Now how was I to call her back when I didn'€™t have her number and had already been punted off several times. Did she call me back. You guessed it - NO. How would you rate this customer service? Sounds like the punt, pass, wear them out with frustration and more poor service until they go quietly into the night. I am officially protesting the bill for the carpet. Now it's in writing as that is what I was told I had to do. (Right before I was put on hold and then dropped.) I asked them to please call me and promised not to drop the call or put them on hold. But they should be informed that the call might be "€œrecorded for clarity and training purposes".

Hidden Costs and Horrible Experience With the Carpet Floors Dept

ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND -- I just decided to sell my condo. I need to do this expeditiously and with as least cost as possible as I don't make a lot of money and am a single mom. So I decide that I could better my condo by replacing carpet and kitchen and master bath floors. Home Depot has a sign that says carpet install complete for $97. I spoke to the salesperson in the carpet dept at the Annapolis Home Depot and he told me that if you have more than 6 pieces of furniture per room it would be another $100 dollars per room.

So of course I have a 7 years of toys and stuff and there are a lot more than 6 pieces of furniture per room. So I pack up a ton of boxes and furniture and hire the movers to take it all to a storage room I rent. Then I call Home Depot and make the measure appt. I spent 2 hours on Saturday waiting for the measure person to come and measure. She was very pleasant. A few days later measure comp called me. I spoke to **, who yelled at me when I asked for a breakdown of the two rooms pricing. I didn't understand at first that there is not separate price for labor. But he was very gruff with me. I asked for a supervisor and spoke to ** for 45 minutes.

After speaking with him, I find out that he can only gave me a quote for one bathroom, the wrong bathroom. Apparently, the measure person who came out to did not include the master bathroom in the floor plan and I need the master bath tiled not the second bath. So I called the measure lady myself and found out that the problem: she mislabeled the diagram... So I told ** about this mislabeling problem. The master bedroom is labeled a foyer. So I tell ** about the mislabeling and he says I have to have the measure person come back out and remeasure.

But I called her back and she said she would fix the diagram. Because it is hard to cut out time and wait half the day for these companies to come out. Then ** calls Home Depot and tells them that I want labor only so they can't help me. Home Depot calls me and leaves me a cryptic message that indicates that can't do my carpet or tile work and they don't even leave a number to call them back at. I called them back and the manager of the carpet dept gave me the breakdown and on top of all the other issues I have had so far, there are hidden costs. Or costs that I didn't expect.

For example: It is 100 per room with more than 6 pieces of furniture and 5 and under are $50 per room. No one told me this and I have been at the Home Depot several times for hours talking to the carpet employee staff. Also there is a separate charge which is the same price as the carpet itself to take out the existing carpet. I was going to go with Home Depot because I had a credit card with them that I hadn't used but with all these costs that are not apparent, I don't know what to expect next. It has been an absolute nightmare. Why doesn't Home Depot train their employees to tell the customers all of the costs and not to have them learn after they get the estimate?

It has been a terrible experience. It is not $97. It is $97 plus the cost to rip up the existing carpet and plus the cost of $50 per room to move furniture. The price of carpet is high enough. But be honest with us customers before sending out the measure person. This has been an awful company to deal with. As a customer who isn't familiar with carpeting and tiling, I would appreciate that Home Depot tell us upfront what to expect. Knowledge is important and even a sign with the costs would be appreciated or an employee with the wear with all to tell the customer the hidden costs upfront. Just beware! Any assistance you can give me is deeply appreciated.

Home Depot Carpet - No Stainmaster in the "Stainmaster" Carpet
By -

ATLANTA, GA -- Dear Mr. Blake, I am in receipt of your letter dated April 27th, 2010. I have already received this carpet inspection report from your 3rd party "€œexpert" who did not do half the testing, or even pull up the carpet from the pad and inspect both the back side of the carpet, the pad and the flooring as my carpet inspection expert did on my carpet inspection report dated January 22nd, 2010. I would say you are wasting your time and money with your so-called "€œexpert"!

What I wanted was the report from Stainmaster, stating that there was some evidence of "stainmaster"€ product in my carpet. Please see my letter dated March 13th, 2010, 3rd paragraph. I believe my carpet staining is the results of the product not present in my carpet, which was the exact problem as I had before with the previous original €"new" carpet I purchased from Home Depot on March 24th, 2005. The first time the staining occurred with my new carpet, Home Depot came to my home, took samples of my carpet, sent it to Stainmaster/InVista.

And I received a report back from ** at InVista stating that there was no Stainmaster in my carpet, therefore the stains were spreading. Home Depot replaced my carpet with new carpet, which apparently is also defective. When I talked to ** at InVista, she stated that InVista had reformulated the product in the carpe in April 2008€“ after she had ordered my new replacement carpet in December 2007, my new carpet was replace in February 2008. Which leads me to believe that this new replacement carpet is defective also.

The stains are reoccurring in the same fashion, different areas in the home, but mostly where the hardwood flooring meets the carpet where one would walk from the hardwood floor to the carpeted area. Please see my letter dated January 7th, 2010. Obviously instead of getting the test results back from InVista, Home Depot is taking the easy way out, not taking responsibility for selling defective carpet, and using 3rd party "experts"€ who just say what Home Depot wants them to say.

I have already reported this to the Atlanta Better Business Bureau, my Facebook, and other blogs, and I am waiting for a local news channel investigative reporter to get back to me. After I make sure that I inform everyone I know about Home Depot'€™s defective carpet, and very poor customer service, I will have my carpets replaced by professionals. As in my carpet inspector'€™s letter dated January 22nd, 2010, my new carpet was not installed correctly, "not been properly stretched"€, and was not properly stapled down, so the carpet is now coming up in areas. I will never do any business with Home Depot again.

There is NO customer service, and obviously any guarantees for defective product purchased. I have learned my lesson, and I am telling everyone I know so they do not make the same mistake I did. Fortunately I live in Bellevue, where there are plenty of other retailers who set the standard for good customer service; Costco, Nordstrom, Starbucks. If I had purchased my carpet from Costco, this would not even be an issue right now, because Costco would have replaced the carpet immediately, and all I would have to do is make a phone call.

Super Staff At Home Depot But Carpet Prices Too High!!

GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA -- I will try to be brief. I have read several negative emails. I am sorry for the horrible things that have happened to some of you. Sounds like "GREED" to me on the corporate end. Anyway, I mainly go to the HOME DEPOT located off of W. WENDOVER AVE. IN GREENSBORO, NC. I have had 2 carpet purchases with HOME DEPOT. I have only had 1 bad experience but the HOME DEPOT (** - flooring or carpet supervisor and Mr. ** - flooring consultant took care of the problem).

The problem is whoever came out to measure the carpet took measurements that left me with almost a room full of carpet, which was a rip-off but ** and ** offer SUPERB CUSTOMER SERVICE!! Plus ** and ** have gone the extra mile to give me discounts to work within my budget plus to meet my needs. Mr. ** initially suggested that I go with one type of carpet for the entire house but I did not listen. Now I am paying over $1,200 extra because I did not listen. ** and ** are such great team leaders who offer value and courtesy that I will continue to go to the HOME DEPOT to meet my needs, with only one thing standing in the way - here it is:

Home Depot, your carpet prices have increased from 30% - 60% on many of your carpets in just a little over a year!! You need to come back down or this may deter me from buying carpet from you in the future for other projects. Your flooring staff, Mr. ** and ** are doing a superb job but your prices are pushing me to go elsewhere. Currently, Mr. ** and I are talking about a 3rd carpet project. He is doing his best to work with me on the price because all I need to do is re-carpet 2 rooms and a small area of which you have already installed carpet and padding. I give both of these guys a THUMBS-UP ACROSS THE BOARD!

Finally, for anyone who lives in or near Greensboro, NC and have had a bad experience with the HOME DEPOT concerning buying and having carpet installed, give ** - carpet supervisor and Mr. ** a chance and I am very confident that they will put your best interest first, meet your need timely and affordably, and show you that they highly value you. If your store refuses to treat you right and give you the best, come to the HOME DEPOT located on W. WENDOVER AVE IN GREENSBORO. ** AND ** WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU.

Otherwise, report the other stores to the Better Business B... or "BBB" if you feel they have taken advantage of you, ripped you off, or was unprofessional. In the future, talk with people and ask several questions. That is what I did. ** was the first man I talked with and I was impressed from day one with his attitude, demeanor, offering high value, courtesy, good carpet consulting advice, and making sure my needs were met affordably and timely. It only costed me more because I went with several different colored carpets rather than listening to **. ** and ** deserve a nice pay raise or increase.

If you are not happy with your store, give these guys a shot. They will not let you down. In the meantime, ** is currently working with me on a 3rd carpeting project (trying not to break the bank) but he is doing the best he can. Hopefully, I can get a HOME DEPOT DISCOUNT COUPON in the mail soon to offset these high costs but this is my fault, not theirs. Plus the installers have been superb as well!! Before I go, always go where you are celebrated, valued, and treated with respect!! Another way of putting it is, "go to places, businesses, and people WHO UNDER-PROMISE BUT OVERPRODUCE!!!!!!!!!"

What Out for Deceit
By -

HAGERSTOWN, MARYLAND -- Today I went to Home Depot. Until today this was my favorite hardware store. I have been remodeling two bedrooms in my house. So we have been shopping for carpet. It took us three times of going on and looking around the carpet area before anyone was even willing to ask us if we were interested in buying carpet. Finally when someone came up to us we let her know, "yes we are interested in buying carpet, we are pricing and comparing right now. We have our measurements and everything if you could give us an estimate that would be great." Well we had a carpet sample from the other two times we went in and no one helped us.

So we showed it to her. We told her that when we were in here last it was 1.48 per sq ft and now it has gone up to 1.58 per sq ft. Not a big deal, she said "yea we had some pricing changes about two weeks ago..." OK so I can buy that since the sign where we got the carpet sample said that. Anyway, there we are sitting at this table so she is saying "since the one room is 11x13 you will need to go with the 12 ft x 13 ft carpet." which I understand. Then after that she starts typing away on her little calculator... saying "you will need 97 for installation... and we need to include a pad for the carpet."

Of course we knew that (she didn't tell us how much nor what type of padding she had just calculated) and then she started just calculating away and not telling us anything... then looks up at us and tells us "it will be $950.00". I thought that was a little much because I went on their website looked at their padding and carpets and did my own calculating. I thought anywhere from a little of 6 hundred to maybe $800. My mom and I just look at each other and told the woman we would come back if we chose to buy from them.

Then right before we walked away my mom said, "how much is that carpet we showed you." The woman responded "1.98 per sq ft not including anything else." I think the woman thought that we were stupid. She didn't even give us her card when we left. Goodness if I could remember her name I would even put it on this page!!!
Then we went to Lowe's where someone helped us right away. Gave us an estimate, wrote down on a piece of paper the breakdown of that estimate. Let us know every little detail of what were would be paying for. Not only that he showed us that padding we had to choose from and told us about the differences in those options.

He took his time and everything he said was honest. We liked everything so well we set up to have a contractor come to the house retake the measurements, and is making sure that everything is good to go for the carpet to be installed. Which by the way, is deduced off of the installment fee later when we actually sign the contract. The guy at Lowe's said that someone would be contacting us in 24 to 48 hours. It took two hours for the contractor to call us and set of the appointment for him to come out tomorrow morning... completely different service compared to Home Depot who couldn't even explain why they would charge us $950 for carpet.

I will not be returning to their store unless I absolutely have to.

Terrible Customer Service and Not Honoring 72 Hr Carpet Installation

CYPRESS, TEXAS -- The Cypress, Texas Home Depot on Hwy 290 does NOT honor their 72 hour carpet installation guarantee. They installed the carpet I purchased 48 hours (or two days) late. The store manager is terrible at customer service. He's difficult to get in contact with, he makes promises to look into the issue and never follows through or return calls. I recommend NOT purchasing carpet at the Home Depot in Cypress, you will regret it. It's just a matter of time before this do-nothing manager's attitude affects the entire store's customer service and profits.

WEST NYACK, NEW YORK -- Purchased carpet from Home Depot with the best guarantee/warranty they had in the department. When there was an issue they didn't stand behind its guarantee and blamed it [on the] manufacturer. The worst service I've ever experienced.

Bait & Switch

VICTORVILLE, CALIFORNIA -- We paid $50 to have someone come out and give us an estimate, we are up in the mountains, but less than 20 miles from a major city and they gave us a big hassle about that but we finally got someone to come up. When the estimator took the measurements, he tried to include areas that were not going to be carpeted but we corrected that before he left. When we got the estimate, they said it was 10 square yards bigger than what we had calculated. When we questioned that, we were told it was because of the "overage" that would be needed to cover the area.

I might buy 4 or 5 extra square yards but 10? That is enough to do another whole room, this is a small house, under 900 square feet, and we're only carpeting about 2/3 of it. Furthermore they are wanting to charge an "out of town" charge plus a "mountain area" charge totaling up to about an extra $77. When we requested the estimate, we were specifically told that there would be no "out of area" charges. AND, if they have to glue it instead of using tack strips, it could be an extra $200 (the estimator should have been able to tell this, plus, the old carpet had tack strips that were nailed, not glued).

As a result, their estimate was about 30% more than we had calculated. Besides all of that, they said we had to pay full cost, then after the carpet is delivered, we could schedule installation - it could be up to a month before they could install. I guess these clowns think we just fell off the turnip truck or something. SHAME ON HOME DEPOT! I don't care if we have to pay more somewhere else, these crooks aren't getting our business!

My Experience With Home Depot
By -

RENO, NEVADA -- I would like to share my experience at Home Depot, Reno NV. I have rental property and am widowed, therefore I have to take care of them by myself. I went to Lowe's Home Improvement to purchase carpet. I was shopping at Lowe's, because that it is about 5 minutes from my home, Home Depot is about 10 minutes away. First it took 3 salespersons to take my order as the answer was "this is not my department". I was told the Dept. would contact me about measuring, 2 days later I get the call (I told them I was on a time crunch). Three days later the estimator showed up 45 minutes late (told them I had an appointment, which I missed).

He came in making all kinds of excuses and said he had to come from Sacramento (2 1/2) hours away. He spent all of 10 minutes measuring, then left saying I would get a call the next day. Two days later I went in to the store and they had trouble finding my estimate. I decided to go to Home Depot. I walked into the carpet department, and with a smile, salesman ** said "what can I help you with", I told him I am in a hurry for carpet and I have people moving in August 1st. His answer was "I will make it happen for You". He helped me choose in-store carpet (which I love), and we started the process.

I told him what had happened to me, he said I will send out an estimator tomorrow at no cost and we will make the deadline for you. What a difference in SERVICE. The estimator called the next day and came out with a computer, not a note pad. He spent at least 45 minutes measuring and re-measuring, wanting to save as much yardage as he could. The next day I went in to see if ** had my estimate, he did, and we sat down and went over it. The yardage was more, due to fact that Lowe's had not measured for closets. The price was better and the experience was so trouble free.

I spoke with the carpet layers today and they wanted to know which day would work for me. I've always bought my paint at Home Depot, I think Behr paint is the best plus the salesman ** has taught me so much and is always so helpful. Takes the time to explain procedures to me, as he knows that I do the painting myself to save money. With the carpet experience and the paint department why wouldn't everyone want to shop at Home Depot. ** (carpet department) and ** (paint department) are a true asset to Home Depot. Home Depot is my new Home.
