Home Depot - Laminate Flooring Installation Quote
By -

CAROL STREAM, ILLINOIS -- After checking prices at a flooring store and Home Depot I decided to go with Home Depot because they seemed to have better pricing. Boy was I wrong! I had the guy come out for a measurement on the 9th and was told I should have my estimate by the 11th. On the 13th I called because I heard NOTHING. I was told that someone would call me back that day. I called again on the 14th because no one called me back. They again told me the same thing. I told them "No", that I heard that the day before and never got a call back and that I was supposed to hear something on Monday.

The guy looked in their computer system and told me the measuring guy put a note about cracks in the flooring and the floor being wavy and that the installer needed to come out and check to see if they could even install laminate, that I may have to go with carpet. I told him I didn't want carpet because of the cats and the fact that they urinated on the carpet that was there (now mind you my mom and I removed the carpet, padding, tacking strips and I cleaned the cement with bleach to make sure it was clean and sterile). He told me the installer would call and I said that if I didn't get a call that day I'd be in the store to get my money back for the measurement ($35 charge).

10 minutes later the flooring company called and set up an appointment for the next day. The installer came out and showed me the wavy spots on the floor and did his thing and told me I'd have a quote Monday. Monday afternoon I still hadn't heard anything so I called them (not really sure why the customer paying the bills should have to make the calls but I did). I was put on hold while he found my paperwork and then he began explaining to me that it came to just over $2100! I told him to break it down for me and he said they needed 20 (25lb bags) bags of cement @ $59/bag to make the floor level. Um hello... Hell no!

The floor is 1/4"-3/4" off in spots. Is he planning on pouring me an entirely new concrete floor? I ended up calling out another flooring company and these guys were so nice (not rude when I asked questions like the measuring guy Home Depot sent out) and told me it would be 3 MAYBE 4 bags of cement at most. Once I get my new quote I will be making a visit to Home Depot to speak with a manager. Do NOT make the same mistake I did. Skip Home Depot all together!

Experience With Home Depot Was A Nightmare!!!!!

WAXAHACHIE, TEXAS -- My husband and I have never had such a horrible experience buying from a company. NEVER!!! It took Home Depot over three months to complete our wood floors, and one of our hallways was bare concrete during that entire time. They under-ordered our wood; supposedly lost the order at least twice; and waited until they had ripped out all of our carpet to tell us they couldn't proceed until we paid for a 'leveling product,' which cost us over $1,000 more than the price we were originally quoted. In fact, they stopped working twice and told us that we had to go to the store and pay for more product before they could do any more work.

Then, they assured us the product would level the concrete slab, so that when they put the wood flooring in, which had to be glued, it would stick. In the end, there were at least six or seven hollow spots under the floor where the wood was loose, and some of those areas were huge! My husband had to take off work entire days to go to the Home Depot store to find out why it was taking so long to get our wood flooring and when they would finish the floors. He was passed from one employee to another, and it seemed that no one EVER knew anything, nor did they seem to care.

We refuse to buy anything from Home Depot ever again, and I am making it my mission in life to tell everyone I know to avoid them like the plague! My husband, who has always been perfectly healthy, actually started having heart problems during the whole nightmarish ordeal. By the way, when they came out to fix the spots where the wood flooring was loose, they drilled holes to squirt in liquid cement and then left without puttying several of the holes. These people wouldn't know how to do a decent job if their lives depended upon it.

Illegal Charges for Installation - Won't refund
By -

BELLINGHAM, MASSACHUSETTS -- I contracted with Home Depot to have them install a ceramic tile kitchen floor, ceramic tile backsplash, and Silestone countertop. Home Depot was responsible for the measurements and installation of all three projects. In the case of the backsplash, the job was grossly overestimated. I paid for materials and installation of 216 square feet of backsplash.

Only after the job was completed, when eleven (11) of the fourteen (14) cartons of tile were left in my garage, did I realize how much I had overpaid. The prepaid labor on these eleven (11) cartons came to $1,013.49 (labor at $5.55 per sq. foot). In addition, Home Depot double charges for the border tile, charging an additional $5.00 per linear foot for border tiles, without reducing the estimated square footage of the backsplash tile. Finally I was charged for more wall outlets that were not present. My kitchen floor experience was similar, although not as grossly overestimated. I paid for installation 472 square feet of ceramic tile (at $7.97 per sq. foot).

When the job was completed, I had two unopened cartons of tile (for which installation was prepaid). Home Depot refused to refund the labor charge on unopened cartons of tile. The store management cites an "industry standard" policy of "materials handled". According to this policy, if the installer simply brings the cartons of tile to your house, you must pay for installation regardless of whether the cartons were even opened. For the kitchen floor, this resulted in an unethical, and I believe illegal overcharge of $271.00. The store refuses to refund this overcharge.

Home Depot corporate refuses to credit this amount unless a sign a "settlement and release" agreement that requires me to: "fully release and discharge Home Depot, and its officers and employees from any and all claims, causes of action, and liability of every kind which customer had or may have arising from or concerning The Transaction." I don't believe anyone should have to sign such a release for an unethical and illegal overcharge.

USIG (HD Subcontractor) Installer Fond of Lying and Extortion

ST PETE, FLORIDA -- I had purchased flooring from Home Depot for both units of my recently purchased duplex, and decided to take advantage of a "whole home install" special being offered. The first issue arose when the measurement person insisted I needed to spend thousands of dollars to tear up existing tile in all of unit B (mine), despite the fact that I was having a floating floor installed. I tried to request an actual installer come out to review the place, since I had had other installers out who would have installed over the tile without issue. I had my own contractor remove the tile, as well as remove some carpet & tile and repairing a subfloor for unit A (my parents').

My contractor also did some patching and leveling in a bad spot in the living/room dining room of Unit B. The day of the install finally arrived; my father was at the house at the time we were told by phone to expect the installer, but he did not show. We left keys & instructions with my contractor since he was finishing up some work on Unit A. When the installer finally arrived, he complained that nothing was level, it would all need to be redone, and called Home Depot to tell them; no effort was made by him to contact me, the homeowner.

After a lot of run around, I finally got word that the installer claimed it would be an additional $800+ to "fix" Unit A (where nothing was actually wrong, as it had already been smoothed & leveled by my contractor, and I had seen in person that the work was done), and over $10,000 to "fix" Unit B. I have personally seen the work that has been done on that unit as well, and the floor is over 95% level, with some possible additional work needed in one area, but nothing to the extent of what USIG's installer claimed.

Needless to say, I have demanded a refund of the installation fees I prepaid and will NEVER recommend USIG to anyone. While I have a good relationship with my local Home Depot in general, I am unlikely to recommend their subcontracted installation services.

Turned Into an Indictment of Home Depot Customer Service

NORTH FORT MYERS, FLORIDA -- This review was inspired by a poorly designed and manufactured Thomasville floor that we purchased at Home Depot and had professionally installed by Home Depot in our dining room. It turned into an indictment of Home Depot Customer service. After months of contact and runaround I felt obligated to send the letter enclosed and post it so others can be better prepare when having a problem with Home Depot.

"Although it seems Home Depot has already made a decision on this matter I felt I had to respond to the way it was handled. At first it was made to look as though the representatives from Home Depot were looking to find a cause for the problem, but in time we realized they were just handing the problem off from one person to the next. Most of what had been promised, regardless how small such as “Pick up touch-up pen at store from counter person” were met by a glazed look from the person at the counter that was never told.

They gave us phone numbers to call and called them manufacture representatives or Home Depot managers in charge of the flooring department, or buyers for the floor department, or the best joke of all, “Home Depot customer service manager”. But when we thought we heard it all, they told us Home Depot will be sending an insurance appraiser that we later found out specializes in auto insurance.

Of course we had a problem with a Thomasville floor, not something normally found in a car. He did not show up for the first appointment that he set up date and time for his convenience, then arrived on his second try with a preconceived conclusion as to what the problem was. His brilliant conclusion was although we had pads on each leg of each chair and pads on each leg of the table, they were not new enough and that made us reasonable for the damage.

I realize I'm not an insurance appraiser with specialties in auto insurance, but even I was able to determine that the material in this Thomasville floor was too soft to support furniture of any kind and that made it totally useless as a dining room floor. We know other customers left negative feedback on this floor with at least one stating it marked so easily, only air furniture should be used. I'm sorry I had to write a negative review.

I much rather Home Depot would have worked with the suppliers and us to come to a fair conclusion for everyone, but instead they decided it was best to waste not only my time but the time of the store employees. Two things have come from this experience, first I will drive by a Home Depot to get to a Lowe's in the future and second I will post a copy of this letter on any space that will have it.

Too many irons in the fire

LAKE WORTH -- I purchased $8K of wood floors to be installed in my home. The flooring was a special order and came ahead of the three week promised delivery time. So far, so good, right? Wrong! The wood had to be delivered to my house by another company. That company couldn't get it to my house for 3 days. HD will not schedule the install until the product is inside your house. Finally the wood arrives but I can't get the install scheduled for another 10-12 days, the install company is different than the delivery company. Finally the day arrives for them to install my floors but after starting the job, they found the flooring to be warped and defective.

So now I have to re order more wood, wait 2 weeks for delivery and 3 days to climatize and THEN get an install date. At this point it's been about 4 weeks since the $8K purchase. But again, the installers can't get me scheduled for install for 7 days. In my opinion I should have been first priority on the install after all this time but I wasn't. So now it's been close to 5 weeks with the mattress on the floor, concrete dust EVERYWHERE and nothing to show for it. The day finally arrives (again) to get these wood floors installed. New installers come this time and find that there is moisture in my bedroom and that they refuse to install over it.

The moisture levels have already been checked twice and were fine. It had recently rained and my bed where the moisture was high had been lying on plastic for the last 4 weeks. So now they say they will come back tomorrow and check the moisture level again. I just broke down and cried. For 5 weeks our furniture has been piled everywhere, and we've been walking on bare concrete. So stay tuned - we will see what happens next.

Other than losing a loved one or a job or illness of course - this has been the biggest nightmare. I chose Home Depot so I wouldn't have to go through all these problems. I do have to say that at least ** in sales has given good customer service by "riding herd" on everyone but there is just too many middle men involved in the whole process.

Horrible service/Incompetence

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, ILLINOIS -- I had a horrible experience recently and have made it a point to advertise my experience so that people won't make the same mistake as I did. We bought a house recently and wanted to change out the carpet and have laminate flooring installed. We contacted Home Depot who came out a week later to take measurements. We were promised a quote within 48 hours, but nothing happened and we called instead to get a quote.

Since it was cheaper compared to another quote, we agreed to get it done and opened a HD credit account as well. That was the start of our woes! The cases of flooring were supposed to have come in on Oct 7 (they actually came in on Oct 5, 2007) and we were promised to be called as soon as they came in, which never happened. We went in person and inquired on Oct 14 and were told that it was there from Oct 5.

Finally, we went on the 16th to pick up the cases. We were given 6 cases (which we didn't realize until we unloaded them at home, because we did not know how many cases were supposed to be there). We went back to HD and asked about the number 21 on the receipt and said that 6 cases didn't seem like enough to cover the entire area. We were then told that there would be 21 cases in all. After waiting about 40 minutes, and speaking to two different people, we were told that Receiving had "screwed up" and marked as accepting 21 cases when only 6 had showed up from the vendor.

After about 3 days of waiting for an answer, we finally made another visit to HD and were told that this issue would be taken of immediately. The next day we received a call saying that they had to order 21 cases again and that we should return the 6 that we had picked up.

At this point, I lost my patience and told them they should come pick the cases up instead, to which they agreed. The shipment of 21 cases never came and after a week of going to the HD store again, we lost it completely and cancelled our order.

The entire process took 45 days and we didn't even get it done at the end. It pushed our move in date by 21 days and we had to pay an extra month of rent at the apartment. We have pushed our laminate flooring plans to next year and worst of all, I have a totally worthless credit card on my history. The staff was not even apologetic about the incident and we had a total of 4 people deal with us on this mishap! PLEASE DO NOT USE HOME DEPOT!

Product failure

GEORGIA -- I recently painted my garage floor with the Home Depot (BEHR) 1 part epoxy. I followed the instructions to the letter. I degreased, I acid etched, I primed then put 2 coats of the coatings and 1 clear coat. It looked GREAT until it rained. When I backed out of the garage I heard this ripping sound, all four tires had lifted off the coatings. Behr responded with "WE WILL REFUND YOUR MONEY" that's great but that is not what I wanted. I spent over 2 weeks on this project and was inconvenienced for longer than that by having to park outdoors. BEHR needs to inform consumers of this defect in the product. Correct it or stop selling the product.

Home Depot Does Not Make Good on Delivery Date!

SEGUIN, TEXAS -- I placed an order through the Home Depot store #8437 on 7/16/13. Half of my order was available for pick up, the other half was to be received today 7/24/13. The store neither has my shipment nor has any knowledge of when it will arrive. I know everything shipped has a tracking number, I don't see how they have no idea where it is at this time nor when it will be expected to arrive. This is unacceptable. I have a contractor who has half my floor done and charges me everyday. He has to drive into town only to turn around because he cannot finish the project. I have an inspector who will not be passing my home to open up for business because my floor is not complete.

I am losing money by the day and feel as though Home Depot does not care because they have already cashed my check. It is very upsetting to know the amount of money I spent at Home Depot along with the other expenses I will incur. I could have gone to a big name floor company and not only received the product the same day but also have a finished floor since last week.

I'm Done With Home Depot
By -

MARYLAND -- From the day the measurement was taken, I questioned the service I would get from the Home Depot. Their website describes in detail how the installation process would go, yet the Home Depot failed to deliver on that description. Steps that were supposed to be done according to the website were not done by the people who work for the Home Depot. My installation coordinator was no help in the process, and seemed disinterested and confrontational from the start. Then the actual installation was bad, because the installers were careless and let a gray liquid leak into my basement, all over my wall, ceiling tile, and carpet.

While the installers did work hard in cleaning up the mess they made, there are still visual clues all over the house that this event happened. When I asked Home Depot to compensate me for this process, I was told all they could do was a very cheap gift card. This installation process cost me almost $2,000, plus the extra time and effort it will take me to get my house fully back in order. I'm done shopping there, and will never step foot into another Home Depot.
